In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young childen, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This book is a lasting testament to his life. Customer Review: A Life Worth Living Jean-Dominique Bauby is a victim of 'Locked-In Syndrome." At the age of 43, he suffered a massive stroke that left him unable to move or speak. His only means of communication -- his left eyelid. Bauby spent weeks painstakingly dictating this memoir -- letter by letter. I read this book in one sitting, it was that captivating. Through short vignettes, Bauby manages to describe the minute intimacies of his life in astonishing detail. From his first experience in a wheelchair, to bath-time, and finally through the development of his communication 'code' - Bauby's emotions touch on both anger and sadness without becomings desperate or hopeless. There are also times of hope and, ultimately, love -- when he describes the visits of his children or memories of this father. Throughout the book, I was struck by Bauby's ability to be thankful for small things -- the ability to move his limbs a fraction of an inch, sitting in the Cinecitta, and the the ability of his mind to fly away like a butterfly. It is not until the end of the book that Bauby describes his last day as a 'perfectly functioning earthling.' This most important day in his life is detailed with very little emotion. This makes the catastrophic details all the more haunting. This is one the most poignant memoirs that I have ever read, and one of my favorite books of 2008.

This handheld features a 32 MB of flash memory (20 MB accessible for file and software storage), Palm OS 5.4 (Garnet), a fast 200 MHz ARM-based processor, and an internal rechargeable battery (that can be charged via the included AC adapter or via the USB cable connected to your PC). Small enough to fit into any purse, backpack or back pocket, it boasts a bright, 160 x 160-pixel color touchscreen display, which provides easy readability of names, addresses, and appointments. You can even color-code appointments for improved organization, and view and carry pictures of friends and family wherever you go. What's in the Box Palm Z22 handheld, USB sync cable, power adapter, 3-step setup poster, Graffiti 2 sticker, Software Install CD-ROM with Palm Desktop, Tutorial, Getting Started Guide, User Guide, and bonus software. Customer Review: Exactly what I wanted I needed a replacement for a 6yr old PDA and this fits the bill exactly. I'm not interested in a combo phone/PDA/MP3 player/email. I don't want to access the web on a handheld just yet. I need to be able to organize my day efficiently and have every conceivable note at hand. Anything I want to look up beyond the standard address book, I put into a memo here. I even have a complete catalog of my knitting needles. Saves me from standing in the yarn shop trying to remember what I have at home. All my airline membership nbrs and those of my family are in here. I love the compact size, that it fits so nicely into my purse.

Make sure to have all knitting needle sizes that you need for all your projects! Boye packages different sized needles for the multi tasking knitter! Customer Review: I think you could do better... I thought this would be the perfect needle for a new project(120 stitches wide). I used the longest and started. After about three rows the needle became unscrewed and I dropped about 25 stitches trying to get it all back on. I then began tightening the cable to the needles after every row in order to not have the ordeal of dropped stitches and lost time. I was not over tightening. Five rows later the cable snapped off the needles and I had to quickly put my work on some straight needles and go and get a normal US 8 29" circular to finish my sweater. DO NOT purchase this set--just buy what you need when you need it.

Factor Markets, Inequality, and Uncertainty: Demand and Supply in Factor Markets; Economic Inequality; Uncertainty and Information. The Global Economy: Trading with the World. For all readers interested in microeconomics. Customer Review: Too dependent on MyEconLab This book is well written but to fully understand the concepts you should use the online addition, MyEconLab. MyEconLab has the homework solutions and more complete tutorials/problems. This wouldn't usually be a problem, but Myeconlab isn't very accessible. If you buy the book new you have access to it for only 6 months, which makes this useless for referencing. If you buy a book used (which I did) you have to buy it separately. Unfortunately this process isn't easy and the company, Pearsons, was very difficult to work with. After 2 weeks of e-mailing and calling customer service I never got a useful answer how to buy just MyEconLab (customer service over the phone said I couldn't and would have to buy a new book). Finally my 5th e-mail from the company, directed me online where I could buy it for $30, but I had already returned my used book by that time. Also, the my econlab plugins only work on windows systems. If you are a mac user and probably a windows vista user you are out of luck. If you are planning on teaching this class, please find another book for you students. This would give them an option of not having to buy a new book and having a complete reference book that isn't dependent on something that expires very quickly. Also, most students will not have the time and patience to deal with Pearsons if they have any issues with MyEconLab.
